The United States has decided not to include Romania in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), which would have allowed Romanian citizens to travel to the U.S. without a visa. The announcement was made by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on May 2.

Romania was expected to join the program on March 31, but the U.S. paused the process in March to review the decision. After completing the review, the U.S. said the change was made to support stronger border and immigration security.

Romania would have been the 43rd country in the VWP, alongside recent members like Croatia, Israel, and Qatar. Now, Romanian citizens must continue to apply for a B-1/B-2 visa when visiting the U.S. for tourism or business.

U.S. officials thanked Romania for its partnership on security efforts and said the country may be considered again for visa-free entry in the future.
