A notice from the central bank says that authorized banks, which are allowed to handle foreign currency transactions can now provide up to $18,000, or its equivalent in another currency, each year to an adult Bangladeshi living in the country for travel abroad.

The Bangladesh Bank made this decision to better support the genuine foreign exchange needs of Bangladeshi travelers, considering how international travel needs have changed.

However, for children under 12 years old, the limit remains the same at half / 50 percent of what adults are allowed.

Even though the total yearly limit has gone up, the central bank still keeps the rule that travelers can only get a maximum of $5,000 in US dollar cash per person, and this amount is included in the overall yearly limit.

A senior official from the Bangladesh Bank said the higher limit should help travelers better cover the real costs of going abroad, such as for tourism, visiting family, and other approved travel reasons.
