New Zealand has updated its visitor visa rules, allowing tourists and short-term visitors to work remotely while enjoying their stay in NZ. The new policy aims to attract digital nomads and professionals, encouraging them to extend their visits and spend more in NZ which technically boosts the economy.
Immigration Minister Erica Stanford highlighted how this initiative positions New Zealand as a top destination for people looking to travel and work at the same time. With the growing global trend of digital nomad visas, she believes this policy will help visitors form deeper connections with the country.
Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis added that the change could strengthen business ties between New Zealand and international professionals. She hopes remote workers will be inspired to form long-term partnerships with businesses based in New Zealand.
Visa Conditions and Restrictions
The updated rules allow visitors to work remotely for overseas clients or businesses without breaching their visa terms. However, there are some key restrictions:
Visitors cannot work for a New Zealand employer
They cannot offer goods or services to local businesses
They cannot take jobs that require physical presence at a workplace
Additionally, anyone staying in New Zealand for more than 92 days within a 12-month period may need to consider potential tax obligations.
