U.S. President Donald Trump signed an order to stop birthright citizenship, trying to exclude children of undocumented immigrants. However, legal challenges have delayed the move.

A federal judge in Maryland has blocked the order, keeping birthright citizenship in place while lawsuits proceed. The ruling follows a decision by a Seattle judge, who said the order was “blatantly unconstitutional.” Four states: Washington, Arizona, Illinois, and Oregon are leading the legal fight.

Legal experts argue Trump cannot revoke birthright citizenship on his own. Past court rulings, including Plyler v. Doe (1982), have confirmed its protection under the 14th Amendment. Changing this would require a constitutional amendment, which is unlikely.

The Trump administration may appeal, but the case could take months to reach the U.S. Supreme Court. Until then, birthright citizenship remains law.
